An Explanation

Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004. It lets you format plain text using simple, intuitive symbols — which can then be converted into HTML or other formatted output.

Basic Syntax Examples

• # Heading creates a heading
• **bold** makes text bold
• *italic* makes text italic
• [link text](https://example.com) creates a link
• `code` formats inline code

Why Use Markdown?

1. Easy to write — no fiddling with formatting menus or buttons
2. Readable as plain text — even unrendered, it's clear and clean
3. Portable — it's just text, so it works on any platform or editor
